. • ': • +. £-*:... . ■• Saturday, April 16. Present—Messrs Chap pel I (Chairman), Shadbolt, Williams, and McDonald. . The minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed. INTERVIEWS. Messrs Deal and Barrett waited upon the Board asking for an extension of road to their properties in Wainui Valley. Clerk to visit and report. MAORI KAIKj AKAROA. Mr John Glynan waited upon the Board asking for ft bridge to be erected over the main creek, as it wan impossible for the children attending school, or the parents, to get across in time of flood. Clerk to visit and report. . IMPOUNDING-CATTLE. Mr H. Hewer waited.-upon the Board to ask whether the main Wairitii Road was open to him as ranger, in order that he 'might take action in. impounding cattle • trespassing thereon. The Chairman said before answering j.thftt-qHeßtioyi^hß-'/'J*!ould;^li'fce ,t to.' ! aek'-'Mr Hewer if he could say that he had properly carried out his duties as ranger, as he 'was ver.y forcibly impiessed that he had not, but had acted in a very arbitrary manner, which he (the Chairman) could prove from what he himself had seen. Such a course of action was never intended by the Board, and trusted Mr Hewer would use more discretion in future. With regard to the Wainui Road been opened, tliat was a question the Board could not answer as they had no information whether the compensation claims for that road were settled or not. Mr McDonald thought the impounding should cease till the Board's pound was erected. The Chairman agreed with Mr McDonald. Mr Shadbolt and Williams thought the question should stand over till there was a full meeting of the Board and this view of the matter was ultimately adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. j Letters were read— From Akaroa Borough Council, asking to be supplied with four dram pipes, 2ft long by 9in deep. Granted. From Mr G. Odell, stating that the road to his property in German Bay was ] in a very bad state, and hoped the Board J would be able to do a little to it before the • winter set in. To be informed the Board ! had no available funds. •• From Mr McNicol covering tracing showing line of C. Bates road, ■French Farm, as now put on the.-official Viap. • From G. Checkley £nd sons,' asking that the Clerk be sent to inspect the road leading to the lighthouse and Flea Bay. as it was in a very dangerous state. Mr Checkley who was present, asked whether the Board intended to supply him with the drain pipes that were promised some time ago. The Clerk was instructed to see Mr Checkley had the pipes he required, and the question of the road was held over for future consideration. From Mr J. T. A. Wright, stating « he had been stuck up by Mr McKay's bull, on the Mount Bossu road, and would thank the Board to take steps to get him (the bull) shifted." Cl-rk to forward copy of letter to Mr McKay; RATES; From Mr F. Nartiy, reminding the Board that he had banked his rates tor 1879-80, amounting to £27 10s 9d. Letter to be acknowledged. , NEW POIJSD. ■ ... ~ ■ From Mr W.Jones, stating that all timber, iron work, etc., were provided and or: the site proposed for the Pound, and begipg to know what steps he was to take. It was resolved to inform Mr Jones that the Board were quite willing to make a progress payment qh the material on the ground, and thnt the question wou'd be eettled at nest sitting of! County Council. MAIN ROADS MAINTENANCE. ''' ' ■'■ As the maintenance of these roads would booh l>e hrought'toa conclusion, Mr McDonald proposed, thnt Hie members oi' the Uoanl should inspect the different coiifr.vjts on the various roads along with the iu&ppclor before they nre finally paused. plaining of the injustice in appointing a cattle ranger for a part of the roads in the district, and submitted that ft public meeting of ratepayers be called to take into consideration the advisability of appointing a'ranger for the whole of the district, or otherwise, and that the present officer be suspended till the meeting was held.« The Clerk was instructed to call a public meeting for Saturday, the 14th May, at It a.m. » '■ • REPORT. ' ' A report from the Clerk on the following roads within the Board's district was read, with estimated cost of clearing side channels, etc., of same, v'iz.:—Children's Bay road. Giehan Valley, Ay liner's Valley, Balguerie road, Saddler's load, Wainni, Pawson's Valley, and Haines road on summit. The Clerk-wa a ordered to call for tenders for the work before next meeting. PAYMENTS. : Stephen Hunt (final). £10, A. I. McGregor £15, J.
