LITTLE RIVER RACES.

The annual meeting of the Little River Races took place on Friday last, the 25th ' instant, on the course at Little River, the use of which had been kindly granted by Mr A. D. Allan and Mr J. F. Stanburj sen. The course was in very good older. The day was very fine, : b'ut the attendance was not nearly so numerous as last year. There wore all sorts of games on tbe ground ; in fact, the Christchurch contingent on this occasion were more numerous th-m heretofore. Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin, with their Pari Mutuel, were in attendance, and did fairly well. Sergeant Willis and Constable Smart were in attendance as representatives of law and order. The racing was good. Details are appended :— Handicap Hurdle Race of 15 soys, open to all comers. Distance two miles. Mr T. Sheenan's br g Shark, 12st (Owner) 1 Mr E. Barrett's br in Levant, list 91b (Rowlands) 2 Mr G. Robinson's eh g Kaiapoi, lOst 61b (Beard) 3 Levant went away with the lead, and was directiy collared by Shark. Kaiapoi baulking after the first round at the back of the course, Levant went up and passed Shark, who, however, on coming home passed Levant, and won rather easily by four lengths. Maiden Plate of 10 soys, for district horses. Entrance 255. Distance 1| miles. Weight for age. Mr G. Robinson's gr m Victim, 6yrs (J. Brown) 1 Mr W. Masefield's b g Parnell, 6yrs (Harding) 2 Mr B. Shadbolt's b g Mac, 200 yds (Shadbolt) 2 Mr J. Belcher's b m Minnie, 500 yds (Owner) 3 Queen of Trumps went away with the lead from Minnie, Mac picking up the distance in the first round, but never waa able to get on terms with the black mare, who went in a winner with plenty to spare. Waikkwa Handicap of 20 soys, open to all comers. Nomination. 1 soy, acceptance £1 10s. Distance 2 miles. Mr B. Barker's eh g Dick, 6st 51b (Mitchell) I Mr A. Barrett's br in Levant, 9st 21b (G. Rowlands) 2 Mr S. Powell's b f Fugitive, 7st 61b (Hall) 3 Fugitive started as favorite. Mountain Maid scratched. Levant went away with tlie lead, with Dick in close attendance, who, after going some distance went up to leader and passed him, and despite the strenous exertions of Rowland, came in an easy winner by some h\x lenths. The grey mare then drew away increasing her lead. Blue Gum under whip and spur made a gallant effort to overtake her, but the mare won with several lengths in hand. Malvina a couple of lengths behind. Consolation Stakes of ssovs. Entrance 10s. Distance 1 mile. Mr Manson's b g Blue Gum, 7st ... 1 Mr E. Barrett's b in Levant, Bst 91b 2 Mr W. Shadbolt's b m Maivina, 6st 91b 3 Mr G. Robinson's c g Kaiapoi, Bst 61b 0 Mr B. Shadbolt's b g Sunbeam, 6st 51b 0 Won by Blue Gum easily. Hack Race of 4 soys. For this race six horses started, and it i was won by Mr B. Shadbolt's Sundown, ' Lady Ellen second, and Colleen third. This brought to a conclusion a very successful meeting. The settling took place at Ho6t Olphert's on Saturday.
