Garrard, the apoßtle of the unemployed in Auckland, owns, it appears, some land in tho Waikato district. In December last the secretary wrote to this gentleman for the amount of his rates, addressing the letter to "Mr Garrard, unemployed.* Auckland," thinking this the surest waj of finding him. In reply, the following fiery epistle waa received :—"Auckland, December 23rd, 1880.—Sir,—i will or might be able to send you the rates and taxes for the little allotment in East Hamilton, Waikato, No. 203, in the course of a month; and how dare you, sir, to have the impudene to addresa the letter to me in the impertinent way in which you have done, i shall cquaint your superior offiser on the subject. It is no matter to you, sir, if lam out of imployment; do you see ? lam shure your worship the mnyer didn't tell you to adress your letter in that way. Mind yourself, sir.— Mr W. G, Garrard, P. 0., Auckland." The envelope containing this haughty announcement was addressed thus :— 'To the Clerk at the County Counßil that recieves the rales, West Hamilton, Waikato, paid pauper in imploy." Oaptain McPherson responded . with a threat of summons, whereat the s urdy champion of the "orney 'anded" adopted a very much milder tone, thus:—"January 20.—Sir,— receiving your letter i must say i am out of work and cannot meet your demand You m-v t know your own business better than i can tell you as you want ea.h.—Yours truly, Mr W. G. Garrabd.
