CRICKET.

AKAROA V. LITTLE RIVER,

Tbe return match between Akaroa and Little River took place on Saturday last on the ground of the latter club. The daywas fino, and all the arrangements were of the most complete nature. The Little River cricketers aro to be congratulated on the possession of one of the finest grounds in the colony. We believe that this is owing in a great measure to the interest in the game and liberality manifested by Mr H. Buchanan. It is not our purpose to finish a detailed account of the game. It will be seen that Little River once more achieved a most decisive victory. And while conceding that they fully deserved it, and that in any case the result would probably not have been materially affected, it is nevertheless only fair to state that several players for Akaroa were unavoidably absent, and some of the team were hardly to be considered fairly representative cricketers. Mr C Barker was captain of the Akaroa team, and the I " River" was officered by Mr H. Buchanan. Barker having won the toss, sent his men to the wickets. In the first innings Messrs Davies and Brodcrick played as substitutes for two of the Akaroa men who had not turned up. There was nothing specially noticeable, about this innings except the long score made by Mr Barker. It will be seen that out of a total of 49 he contributed no less than 28. This was the top score of the day. The bowling and fielding of Little River were deserving of all praise. In Akaroa's two innings extras only amounted to 4. When the Akaroa men were all out, an adjournment was made for lunch which was provided for the visitors in the most hospitable manner. Little River then went to the wickets, and were not disposed of till 107 had been put together. Four of their number got into double figures, Smart topping the list with 24 to his credit. Akaroa had thus an uphill game to play, as they needed 59 in order to avoid a one innings defeat. They had, however, worse fortune in their second venture than in their first, being all disposed of for 29. Little River was thus victorious in one innings with 29 runs to Bpare. The moral is that a good cricketers, unlike a poet,ia made, not born and there is only one thing that will make him, and that is practice. We understand that the Littio River club, being satiated with Peninsula victories are looking, like Alexander, for freeh worlds to conquer, and hope soon to arrange a match with Lincoln, in whom they hope to find " foemen worthy of their steel." We wish them every success. If beaten, it cer taiuly will not beingloriously, and perhaps the best thing that could happen to them would be to meet a team strong enough to " put them through," or there is a danger of their being content to rest on their laurels.
