TRAINING NOTES

(By Sportsman.)

So the handicaps have appeared for the twentieth anniversary of the Head of the Bay race meeting, and the usual growl, of course, but as it is customary and a British privilege, let them growl until they're tired and then we shall have the real sport in right clown earnest. The entries for the Maiden have filled out well, viz.. four three-year olds and an aged and oft-tried mare of Brown's called Hollyhock. As she has strength, pace and breeding, I fancy she will be there or thereabouts at the finish—twice across a heavy sandy beach being, in my opinion, too much for the youngsters, I shall plump for Hollyhock, with Colleen close up at the finish.

The Wainui Plate ought to be hotly contested by Victim, as she is said to be by old Traducer, out of Lady Jane Grey, and she will not be over-weighted, carrying only the same as Blue Bell, who is her junior. Jack, though a stickler, ia too slow. I come to The Maid. Will she flirt with her companions as of yore ?■ I don't think so, as list is a decided steadier.; she may win, but Jimmy won't have so much up his sleeve as he used to have. At all events I shall tip—Mountain Maid 1, Blue Ribbon 2, Victim 3. The Publicans' Purse will be won by Dick, with Sunbeam (if he accepts) 2nd ; the rest of those entered wiH probably be too much used up in the previous races. It must be remembered that I merely give my opinion ; the pot may boil- over in every instance, as is frequently the onso. and if you don't bet- yon wnn't re#r<?r ; i. —A Mf.rry '.'lin'stiim*, (ii'm> :, .e Sport, as«d :i Hni.'py N'-"-v Year.
