OUR REPRESENTATIVE.

To the Editor.

Sm,-—I notice in your last issue a letter under the above heading signed " Elector." The writer seeks to draw Mr Montgomery. My first impression on reading was " an enemy hath done this." Surely "Elector," if not altogether ignorant of current topics, must be avvare that none of the members of the Government have yet spoken. It is true that "these samo gentlemen have " doled out very treatment to the Peninsula, " which is a circumstance requiring explanation from the delists. "Elector" ought to know that it is the duty of the Government to defend their conduct in the past, and explain their intentions for the future. They have no right, though doubtless they are cowardly enough to wish it, to expect the members of the opposition to disclose their tactics beforehand. While the present set rule the destines of New Zealand, I for one am proud to be able to reckon our member in the ranks of the opposition. That being the case, he is quite right to wait until the other si le has declared itself. We must never forget that we form part of a great commonwealth, and must be prepared to take part in the necessary struggles appertaining to political life. I am not like your correspondent " enabled to state " anything whatever as to Mr Montgomery's intentions, but on broad general principles would certainly advise that gentleman to bide his time.—l am etc, < CIVIS. Dec. 15, 1880.
