AKAROA REGATTA.

To the Editor.

Sin, —If " Onlooker " were to confine himself to facts when he rushes into print on a subject that he knows nothing at all about, I should not have troubled you to insert this, but as his statements are calculated to mislead the public and stigmatise the members of the committee, I will endeavor to set him right. He states that there is £30 for a yacht race and only £5 for a whaleboat race. I may inform him that the first prize in the yacht race is £25 with a second prize of £5 if three start. The first prize in the whaleboat race is £10, and the srcond £3. Those amounts have been alloted by practical man three of Whom are owners of whaleboats, and know what they are doing. If Onlooker thinks he can impiove on this we shall be happy to see him at our next meeting on Friday. A sub scription from him will also be thankfully received by us. I am, etc., ONE OF THE COMMITTEE. Dec. 8, 1880.

To the Editor.

Sir, —A letter signed " Onlooker," and bearing on the above subject, appears in your issue of 7th inst. I certainly think as he does on the absurdity of a yacht race. Our yacht races have never been a success. We cannot offer a sum sufficient to entice any outsider to compete, and we have only one yacht here. Don't let us have the farce of a barge or two entering to start tho race, and then retire for the yacht to go round the course and win. I am merely one who declined to contribute to the

1 funds on the above grounds. By dividing the sum set ap:irt for the yacht race, we could have seversd events which we could not otherwise afford. I advise the Committee to do nway with the race, for I daresay, after so much adverse opinion on the matter, they are scarcely prepared to further discuss the point—l am, etc,
