TRAINING NOTES

(By Sportsman.)

As most of the horses entered for the Head of the Bay races are in training, 1 purpose giving my "tips" after the handicaps appear, together with other desultory memoranda on events before the public.

The German Bay stables will be represented by Mountain Maid, Hollyhock, and a Guy Fawkes' filly of Tim McGuire's. Old Bismarck may also put in an appearance at the eleventh hour. The Hertford stables will be represented by a string of five, viz., a colt and two fillies by Eclat, and Blue Ribbon and Jack. Wallaces' have got old Dick and a gray mare out of Lady Jane Gray, by Traducer. The Augean stables at Akaroa will be represented by that dynamite horse Asbestos and Jimmy, the former not being good enough to make the running for the latter, who, be it remembered, recently hsd a walk over for the Mayoral Stakes, and, though an undoubted honest horse and good stayer, I fancy he might find better company up here with less chance of infection from the rancid greasy heels of his stable companion. At all events there will be plenty of horses, if not much money, and with the tide to suit, and punctuality the order of the day, I don't mean at Host Brooks' nipping, but in getting off the different events, let us hope for a pleasant meeting at this convivial time, and a good day's sport.
