GERMAN BAY SIDE-SCHOOL.

To the Editor

Snt, —Please allow me to put you right as nearly as possible. Your leader of last Friday contains more, I think, than should come from your editorial chair, as the tone of your paper is, in general, pretty liberal. In the first place, the German Bay side-school will not cost anything near what you state. If I say not within a- century, I know I am inside the mark. You also seem to ignore the right of education to we poor mountaineers. You must have forgotten that, when the Akaroa school district was proclaimed, how carefully your taxgatherer hunted us up for the last stiver. Then, again, when the German Bay school district was proclaimed, we had the exquisite pleasure of paying again to build that, and out any of our children ever getting an hour's tuition in either school. We then built a small school out of our own pockets, and paid the master's salary for over too years. You say it would be out of the question to build such a school if the Board were done away with, and that the ratepayers themselves would have the spending of their own money. You also made another mistake when you said there were only six children to attend it. For your information I can tell you that there are over thirty children living within one mile of the school ; and, if you require ocular demonstration of these numbers, the inhabitants will, I am sure, give your reporter a hearty welcome at the school warming or little spree they hope to have when the school is opened.

And I will venture to say that there is not another school on the Peninsula that will compare with it, both for strength, elegance, durability : nd cost The workmanship has every appearance of being first class, and as far .is any one can see is a credit to the builder. Combined with this, it has a splendid view, and a really healthy situation. And Mr Editor, I can assure you that we have fought hard to get it, and all your croaking about retrenchment won't pull it down. Take a look at " Asbestos'" Focus on Friday last, and see if you didn't copy poor old John Sundowner, and take your leader out of the wrong envelope. By inserting tho above you will greatly oblige—Yours, etc.,

EDWIN CHAPPELL
