AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of Iho above Cotinoil was held in their Chambers, Balgiierie street, on the 27th inst, Present: —His Worship the Mayor, Crs McGregor, Bruce, Ganvood, Gutberlet, Brown, and Noonan. The minutes of tlie previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from Mr A. I. McGregor, enclosing certain documents relating to his lato office of Returning Officer. The letter concluded as follows : —"As to the conditions I latterly held the office under, I Jhave to refer you to my letter on the subject of 13th Sept. 1879. Any remarks then marie upon the subject, I took no notice of, and the tenor of that letter still holds." The "conditions" referred to by Mr McGregor were that he would perform the duties of the office gratuitously. It was resolved that tho letter be acknowledged. TOWN HALL ACCOUNT. On the motion of Cr Garwood, the Standing Orders were suspended to allow of. a motion of Cr Noonan's on this subject to come on at this stage of the meeting. The motion was then put as follows :— " That the resolution passed at a meeting of the Council held Sept. 15, 1880, as follows : • That the payment of the account for the Town Hall (£1 10s) be not settled until this Council ascertain what are the terms on which the shareholders of the Town Hall hold the building from the Government for public purpose.-,' be rescinded."—Carried. PAYMENTS. The following accounts were passed for payment : Clerk's salary £4 8s 4d, Town Hall £1 10s. FINANCE. His Worship reported the receipts since last meeting to have been £17 12rs Gd.The overdraft at present was £81 5s lid. Of a total rate roll of £250 lGs, £89 10a 2d had been collected, leaving £IG7 5s 10il yet duo. Cr Garwood called His Worship's attention to clause 55 of the Standing , Orders relating to the custody of the seal. His Worship stated that councillors had at one time boon supplied with keys, but that several had been lost. STREET CLEANING. Cr Garwood said that at the last meeting the question of cleaning the streets had ' been mentioned, lie would like to hear ] the opinion of councillors on the subject. '.
WHARVES. There was another matter ho would like to mention, and that was the question of the jetty. At present it was not safe for life or limb. He thought the Town Clerk should write to the proper Department calling attention to the disgraceful state of the jetty. His Worship said the Council had ad some correspondence with the Government on the matter. The Government had offered to hand over the jetty to the Council with about £90. The Council replied offering to take it over, if the Government would hand over the amount received as wharf dues since the abolitionof Provinces. To that letter they had received no reply. Cr McGregor fully concurred in the remarks that had fallen from Cr Garwood. Resolved that the Government be written to, calling their attention to the disgraceful state of the wharf. The Council then adjourned.
