claims during the ten years of its existence £140,000

Christchurch, Oct. 16. The condemed Chinaman, Ah Lee 3 now seems to realise his position.

MrT. A. Mansford, District Judge and Resident Magistrate of Wellington, died at Port Chalmers this morning. He arrived in the Hawea to undergo an operation for an affection of the throat, and only survived the a, few hours. He was the oldest solicitor in New Zealand, and was greatly respected here.

Wellington Oct. 17

Muck speculation cxL t s as to who will succeed Sir J. Vogel as Agent - General. The names of Sir <! K. W. Stafford and Mr. Reader Wood are most frequently meiitioned. Colonel Whitmore, who it is known has been making preparations for a visit Home, is .also spoken of as temporary occupant of, the post ; while it is more than whispered that Sir William Fi'tzherbert will not be averse to exchange the Spealcership of the Legislative Council for the'Agent-Generalship at precisely the same salary, viz., £800 per annum. If this be so, I feel inclined to place Sir William as first favourite, more especially as his appointment would leave another valuable place of patronage in the hands of the Government.

In confirmation of what has already been stated about Sir Julius Vogel's return, I have it on direct authority that he purposes coming to New Zealand, but whether to re-enter politics or not is uncertain
