Local and General.

The Hawea, which arrived last night brought the machinery for the new sawmill which Mr Armstrong proposes crectiog on his land on the range behind the Balguerie road.

An election—we had almost written the "usual fortnightly election "—to fill a vacancy in the Borough Council was to have been held last Wednesday, but again no candidate put in an appearance. In another column will bo found a notification from the Returning Officer/inviting fresh nominations to be sent in up to Friday next, the 22nd inst.

A LARGS! number of the public was in attendance at the R.M. Court on Wednesday. Among the audience were several dogs who persisted in indulging in those propensities which Dr Watts has declared to bo lawful and commendable in them, though reprehensible in juveniles of the human race. This proceeding became objectionable, however, and various futile endeavors were made to clear the court of the pugnacious animals. Finally, His Worship directed the police, if they could not persuade the dogs to retire, to turn out their owners, when the dogs would doubtless follow. Gentlemen with canine favorites had there f ore better either leave the latter at home, or themselves abstain from visiting our local Palace of Justice. In another column will be found the first of a series of articles on the Melbourne Exhibition written expressly for this journal. The author is a literary man (without a wooden leg) of great repute in Australia. We hope that our readers will appreciate our efforts to provide (hem with original reading matter of an entertaining and interesting description, and second them by endeavoring to increase the circulation of the Akaroa Mail. A PAiUGiurn in the Lyttelton Times says : C_ptuin Barry attempted to give a lecture at the Academy of Music last night, but tho audience interrupted him, and pelted him with eggs till he was compelled to beat a retreat. A correspondent writes to the Timaru Herald : —It may interest some of your readers to know that two mock suns were visible on Saturday afternoon last at 5.15There was a mellow haze extending from 15deg. above the Hunters Hills, and as soon as the sun entered this he threw out two mock suns on each side of him. This curious appearance lasted about a quarter of an hour, when the bright spots gradually faded away. " Genial John " has resumed the line of business which he quitted in order to •'retire into private life, and keep a public house." We clip the following from the Press of a late date :—Messrs Oram Brothers, of the Koyal Hotel, have just completed the erection of a very complete range of stabling, running through almost from Oxford terrace to Tuam street, and having an entrance from both. The building is 95 x 45, contains twenty largesized stalls, with four loose, boxes, office, and groom's room, harness room, and appliances. All the latest improvements in the internal fittings of stabling havo been introduced, and when finished the range will be one of the most complete in the city. When it is mentioned that Mr John Beocher, who is too well known here to need any further comment, is the lessee, nothing is necessary to be added as to the way in which they Avill be carried on. The following is the report of the Borough Auditors on the account for the year ending September 30 last: —" We have this day examined the accounts of the Akaroa Borough Council and found them correct, with the exception of the following particulars :—The blocks in the Oog Registration ticket book from April 1 to May 6 were not properly filled up. Three cheques (amounting io £8 14s) have been paid, for which no vouchers appear. We would recommend that all. receipt books have printed consecutive numbers, in accordance with, clause 120 of tho Municipal Corporations.Act, 187 G. We find that the accounts have been satisfactorily kept by the present Town Clerk. ■S. Watkins. and A. Nicholls, Auditors-'' We may mention that the three cheques referred to for which no vouchers appear were drawn by the late Town Clerk, one of them being for his salary. With reference to the consecutive numbering of receipt books, His Worship stated that he had numbered those now iv the office himself with red ink. For the future tho recommendation of the auditors should be complied with, and the books should have printed numbers.
