AQUATICS AND ATHLETICS, To the Editor.
Sm,—Lately I have heard a good deal about a " projected regatta at Akaroa," but despite this I can get no definite information on the subject. I also hear that no meeting has been held to discuss the matter.
Now, sir, do you not think it about lime that the Regatta Committee drew up a list of events and published them, and appointed some person to canvass the district for subscriptions ? I hear that several persons have already commenced to bi.ild model yachts to compete in the forthcoming regatta. If no regatta is
held, tho builders' trouble will go for nothing. I would also suggest a few improve, ments in the old programme. Instead of so many boys' races, 1 think those should be abolished, and a four-oared race (for persons who do not earn their living by manual labor) adopted in their place. On looking over last year's programme, I can find nothing else but boys' and sailing races. Then the same may be said with respect to the Sports. Instead of a "half-and-half" affair (as it was last year), let the Committee go in for a " substantial " programme, including a Cup, mile handicap, walking race, quarter-mile handicap, and & 100 yds race for men. Then, if they wish to give the youngsters sotns amusement, let them have a separate arrangement for them, and give them presents instead of money. The latter is never so acceptable to children a* - tho former. I think tho Regatta should be held first, then the sports, and then let the day be wound up with a jolly good entertainment, and the prizes bo distributed at the performance.—l am, etc., STROKE-OAF.
