Melbourne, Oct. 4. Arrived—P. and 0. Co.'s s.s. Hydivpes, with inwards Suez mail, and Money Wigram's s.s. Somersetshire. The attendance r.t the Exhibition was G,500. The ■■ Age " str.tes that an intrigue is tifloat to oust the Berry Government after the recess, and that Sir John O'Shannassy and Murray Smith are combining with that object. Adedaide, Oct. 4. The South Australian revenue for the last quarter amounted to £496,000, being an increase of £87,000 a? compared with last year. Brisbane, Oct. 4. The revenue of Queensland for the past year amounted to £183,000, there being an increase of £81,000 over last year. The Customs revenue for the quarter is £135,000.

THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION.

OPENING CEREMONY

Melbourne, October 1.

The International Exhibition in Carlton Garden was opened to-day with great ceremony. The day was proclaimed a public holiday in honour of the event, and it was strictly observed *. as such, all places of business being closed. The weather was fine, but somewhat cloudy and windy. After His Excellency had formally m declared the Exhibition open, tho viceregal party on reaching the New jp Zealand Court were received by the - """ Commissioners, Dr Hector, and Mr Blackwood, and the Secretary Mr Callis. Dr Hector presented Lord Normanby with a handsomely bound copy of the catalogue of the New Zealand exhibits, which was published to-day, and with a copy of the Handbook containing information regarding the products, progress and statistics of the Colony. Althrugh this was His Excellency's first official visit, it was not the first "* time he had visited the Court, for he has done so on several occasions, _ and has shown that ho still retains a livelj interest in the doings of the _ Colony. The court (resents a pleasing and attractive appearance, although several «» details are still imperfect. The entries comprise o'3l ..-xhibits, which is greater . than at the Sydney Exhibition, while the space allotted there to New Zealand

was one-half more than at Melbourne, Where there arc only 8000 feet. The Commissioners therefore have had considerable trouble to find space for all the exhibits, but have happily surmounted the difficulties, and notwithstanding that the Court is crowded, every exhibit is displayed to the best advantage. The following is an abstract of the classification of the exhibitsi—dArL/74-f education apparatus processes and the liberal arts, 93 ; furniture, 62 ; textiles, 32 ; raw manufactures, 77 ; machinery, processes, mechanical industries, 63 ; alimentary, 134 ; horticultural, 31 ; mining, 21.

The arrangements which were made for the openinf of the Exhibition generally were excellent, and no hitch of any kind occurred. The streets were thronged by crowds of people, who were very orderly. A brilliant illumination took placo in the harbor at night, the sky being clear. There were numbers of spectators.

The attendance at the opening ceremony yesterday was G,500, and 15,000 visited the Exhibition during the day.

The Queen has replied to His Excellency the Marquis of Norm an by's telegram announcing the opening of tho Melbourne International Exhibition, and wishing it every success. It is proposed to hold a, grand review of both military and naval forces on Nov. 9, the Prince of Wales' birthday.
