GARDeSTmEMORANDA FOR THE
MONTH OF OCTOBER,
(Written expressly for The Alcaroa Mail.)
KITCHEN GARDEN.
Tho season., .so. far, has been all that could be desired, but as we generally have somosharp frosts about the beginning of October, those who have potatoes well
advanced had better prepare for the worst by landing them well up, and have some boughs, fern, or straw in readiness to put over them on tho first appearance of a frosty night. Sow celery, melons and cucumbers in hot beds; also, vegetable * marrows, pumpkins, -and tomatoes, to bring them forward for planting out. Keep the hoe at work on ■every oppor<o tunity. A few hours at present does more execution than days when the weeds get larger. FRUIT GARDEN. In exposed situations, see that newlyplanted trees are properly secured by being staked and tied. If allowed to be blown about with the wind, they work a space round the neck by which tho drought gets down to the roots, and is often the cause * of young trees dying. Remove weeds and dead leaves from strawberries, and apply a IP mulching of stable manure between the rows, to keep the plants moist duririg'dry weather. The juice of the manure, washed down by every shower, will prove beneficial ; on dry borders mulch tho roots of trained trees, and avoid cropping too near fruit trees. A few potatoes or cabbages T can well bo sacrificed for the sake of fruitbearing trees. FLOWER GARDEN. Geraniums and other pot plants will require strict attention as to watering, and about once a week a good watering with clear liquid manure will benefit them. _,a Forward plantß will require shifting into larger pots. Sow seeds of both tender and hardy annuals and perennials. Plant carnations, pinks, pans-ies, and other flowering plants; verbenas, scarlet geraniumsfuchsias, and dahlias may be planted out towards the end of this month.
