PIGEON PAY ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Saturday, Sept. 4. PresentMessrs Hay (Chairman), Budua, Pettigrew and Pilcaithly. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read — From Messrs Joynt and Perceval, of Christchurch, re Woodill's sea-wall contract, advising the Board that, as Mr Woodill had failed to complete his contract within a proper time, tho Board may now ignore Mr Woodill and his trustees in bankruptcy and finish the work as it may think fit. From the Secretary to the Treasury, advising remittance of L 35 3s 9d (the complement of its share of surplus land revenue, Canterbury) to the credit of the Board's account at. the Bank of New Zealand, Lyttelton. From the ecgineer, as final certificate to Mr Hale. The Board highly commended this gentleman for the excellent manner in which he finished his work, and coupling him with Messrs Coatevvorth and liolloway, remarked that such contractors ought to be encouraged. From Mr A. McGregor, gixing some explanation re account from Survey Office. The Board then passed Mr McGregors own account in full. From Mr Holmes, Christchurch—on behalJ: of Mrs E. Holmes—giving notice of objection against the construction of Fenton's road. It was proposed by Mr Budua,
Necufi.lod by Mr ■ l'ettigww, and'carried — That Mr llulmes be nerved with notice to sustain his objections before the Board on the 18th met, in the Board's office. From the surfaceman, with monthly report and account. MISCELLANEOUS. After some conversation on the desirability of doing away with the County Council, Mr Pitcaithly proposed, Mr Budua seconded, and it was carried—That other Road Boards in the county be communicated with, re propriety of abolishing the County Council, as county business could b& more efficiently and cheaply done by Road Boards. It is desired that other Road Boards should take this matter into their consideration, to Lβ. prepared for united action. As the Board is now to be left to its own resources, it was .agreed on the motion of Mr Pitcaithly, seconded by Mr Pettigrew, That a rate of 9d in the L be struck for next year,;to be payable: on or before the Ist November, coming. I Mr Pettigrew, through representations made to him, called the attention of the Board to the bad state of the cuhert at the entrance to Mr Scott's farm. Mr Pettigrew agreed to call Mr Scott's attention to the matter. Tncourse of conversation arising out of this subject, the Board appeared anxious to impress upon ratepayers the desirability of their looking to small damages like this in their own nciighborhr>od,su.eh as that caused by sledges coining on the roads as it would save much in rates. After passing accounts to the amount of L2B 10s, the Board adjourned till the 18th September.
