OKAINS BAY ROAD BOARD.

' The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday last, in the Public Library. The members present were Messrs W. H. Moore (Chairman), P. Callaghan, H. Bennett, and T. Oldridge. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were received from the Treasury stating that the sum of £59 5s 9d had been paid into the Board's Banking account, being their share of the surplus Land Revenue. Mr Mcintosh requested that the Board would allow him a month to pay the rent of the Little Akaloa jetty, which he had rented for the last year, as he had not collected a penny of the rates due. It appears he gave £20 a year for tho jetty, but that the rates only amounted to about £10. TENDERS. Several tnnders tor the Little Akaloa jetty for the ensuing twelvo months were opened, and on the motion of Mr Oldridge, seconded by Mr McCallaghan, Mr Bonnet's tender (£lO was accepted. I The tender of Mr J. Dalglish for the Government jetty, Le Bon's Bay, £42, on tba same terms as he had hitherto rented it, was accepted. Tenders for the clearing and widening to 6ft on the solid, and other work, of the road between Okain's creek and the cave in little Okain's were opened. interviews. Mr James interviewed the Board. At the last meeting of the Board Mr James had agreed to sell a portion of his section for abroad, and he intended stating a price at this meeting. Mr James said as he was prevented from tendering, Mr

Callaghan not having called for him on his way to visit the road, he would withdraw his promise to sell the land unless the Board would make him an offer for it. Mr Callaghan moved —" That as the Board could not be both buyers and sellers they could not do so." Seconded by Mr Bennett. A most unseemingly discussion took place, which lasted for more than an hour, Mr James having to be called to order several times. Mr Weir drew the attention of the Board to a road which he asserted was fenced across, and informed the Board that he and his neighbours were determined to havea right of-way. Mr W.Thackersnid he should hold anyone responsible who interj fered with his fence. The Clerk drew Mr W. Thacker's attention to clause 79 of the fifth pait of tho Public Works Ordinance, showing him he was liable to a penalty of £10 a day while his fence obstructed the road. •» MOTIONS. ** Mr Bennett proposed, and Mr Old ridge secneded—" That the tenders bo held over > as the parties concerned are trying to ob- iw— struct the Board in the matter." Carried. f^ Mr Oldridge proposed, and Mr Bennett seconded —"That in future any person having business with the Board should send in their case in writing, and that no person should interfere with the business of the Board." Carried unanimously. MR JAMES AGAIN. «, Mr James said he would like to ask the Board if they would form a road of from 8 to 10 chains on the surveyed road by his section. It was resolved —" That, in the ©pinion of the Board, the road would benefit no one but the applicant, and as the Poard would require to make one «. which would be of use to all, himself concluded, their answer would be no." Would the Board allow him to make the road himself, at his own expense ? Yes, cer- M tainly, if he did not interfere with his neighbour's fences. LITTLE AKALOA ROAD. Mr Bennett asked for certain work to be done on the Main Valley road, Little Akaloa, at a cost of about L 7 ; also for L 5 to repair three places on the Little Akaloa and Stony Bay road. Granted.— STONEY BAY. "" A petition was received from a large number of settlers in and around Stony Bay, asking that the road surveyed cross- .. ing the bend of the road, between Okain's and Little Akaloa, should be formed a distance of about 30 chains. The petitioners proposed spending about L7O on a tramway and jetty if the Board would do this. Mr Oldridge moved and Mr Callaghan ~ ~ seconded—''That the matter bo held over till the Board were in fun Is, and that then they would willingly do so." le bon's bay. The Clerk mentioned that there was about LIOO to pay fei contracts which would be soon finished, and they must make provision for it. „ Tho amounts to the credit of tho various bays were as follows:—Okain's L 5 5s 6d, Little Akaloa L 29 14s 3d, out of which about LlO had to be paid to-day. Le Bon's *- Bay had had in February last year tho amount of L 296 to their credit, but with the contracts now let the liabilities against that were about L3OO, and Okain's Bay owed Le Bon's about LIOO.
