DOG REGISTRATION.

To the Editor.

Sir,—At the last meeting of the County Council, I see by your report, Mr Hay asked tho Clerk if he could state the number of dogs registered in the district. I did not Bee an answer to the question ; probably the Clerk knew nothing about it.

I quite agree with Mr Hay that half the dogs are not registered in the bays ; at the same time I fail to see how they will mend the matter by putting on a ranger to look after the wholo of the county, as the Council intends doing. There is one thing certain—a man to do tho whole of the work will require a salary which the ratepayers at the present time can ill afford to pay ; more especially as tho Council sticks to the whole of the registration foes, instead of banding them over to tbe different Road Boards, as was at first intended.

I am told on good authority that there should be between L7O find LBO for dog foes in the Okain's road district, which in all fairness should be spent there.

Willi regard to a lot of the dogs not being 1 registered, I do not see how it can be otherwise. In the Okain's district the Registrar lives in Okain's Bay. How is he to know who has dogs in Little Akaloa or Le Bon's Bay ? Certainly he cannot know> neither would a ranger, if appointed.

I believo a great many neglect to register thoir dogs, on account of having to lose a day to do so in going from one bay to another.

If tbe County Council wants to have the thing looked after, lot them empower the Road Boards to appoint a Registrar in each bay. The man so appointed would know every dog in the place; by thu* means none would escape ; the fees to be paid in to the Road Baards.—l am, etc.,

RATEPAYER,
