Sydney, August 30. Arrived—Union Co.'s s.s. Wakatipu from Wellington on Saturday. Sailed— Hero, on Saturday, for New Zealand. The case commenced against the proprietors of the lm Sydney Evening News" for contempt of court in commenting on Judge Windeyer's summing up in an action for libel,was adjourned till to-mor-row. Defendants offered a qualified apology, but the Bench objected to it. The E. and A.M. s.s. Brisbane has arrived at Cooktown from Singapore,and brings the following news :— * A second shock of earthquake occurred on July 20. It completed the destruction of Manilla ; the injhabttants were panic stricken, but there was no great loss of life. The pirates who attempted to seize the s.s. Bowen have been discharged for of evidence. quintils of tobacco have been sold at 19dols.
