AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this Council was held at their Chambers, Balguerie street, on Wednesday evening, August 18. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs Cullen, Kiseel, Noonan, Black, McGregor, Henning, and Brown. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. -"■, ' CORRESPONDENCE. '"".'•' Letters were read— From the Treasury, Wellington, acknowledging the receipt of Ll4 15s 4d, paid into the public account. , From Mr Sadler, asking-permission to erect a fence on his land near Leprous forge.—Request granted. From Mr Armstrong, tendering the resignation of his seat as councillor.—Rβsignation accepted. From Mr J. Cullen, asking permission to erect a fence on his land in Jollie street.— Permission granted. / , ; . LICENSES. ' ; Applications were received from Messre Daly and Billens for licenses to keep petroleum. —Granted. Mr J. Gundy applied for a .carrier's license.—Granted. . . .• . b.m; court fines. A statement of fines collected at the" R.M. Court during the month of July was read, showing the amount to be L2O 15s. . J EEPOBTS. The Chairman of the Works Committee reported that nothing had been' dene since last meeting, but he recommended that something should bo done to the bfidge in William street, as it was unsafe at tho present time ; he also recommended that a few loads of gravel should be used, and other repairs effected to the drainage near The Mail Office, and near, Chad wick's corner. It was resolved that the works should be done as recommended.
Cγ Noonan reported that he and Cr Black had waited upon Mr Lelievre, and arranged the difficulty between him and Mr Sadler. THE FINANCES. The Chairman of the Finance Committee reported the overdraft at the bank to be Llßl 17s 9d. PAYMENTS. The following accounts were passed for payment—E. W. Morey; 17s; H. Burke 5a ; W. Roasiter, 16s; A. Scott, L4Bs 3d ; M. Wright, 15s. v RETIRING MEMBERS. His Worship gave notice that at the *time for the retirement of councillors (according to the 64th clause of Municipal Corporations Act) Crs Black, Brown and Kissel were the retiring members. LIGHTING. Cr Henning proposed—" That from the 27th inst. the lighting of lamps in the borough be discontinued, excepting the three skirting the sea-wall, and that Hie Worship the Mayor and the Chairman of the Finance Committee be empowered to i make arrangements for the lighting of the eaid three lamps till. October 31." The proposal was seconded by Cr Black.* Cr McGregor proposed as an amendment—" That in , the present etate of the finances of the borough the lighting be discontinued at Jthe , termination of the present contract." i „. , ..r Cr Cullen seconded the amendment, . which' was ; fin ally carried.' * ' A I .LATE OLEBK'S DEFICIENCY* ! Cr McGregor, proposed—'« That the \ opinion of the learned counsel betaken i whether the deficit of the late Rate ColI'jlector .and. Cr Henning proposed, Cr Cullen. seconded, and it was carried—■" That the necessary steps be taken for recovering all outstanding rates.'?' '••"• '■ ,: ■ ■ 'NOTICE OF MOTION. ; Cr McGregor gave notice that at the next meeting of the Council he would ask— , ! What .: is' the position of the As'hburtoni reserves belonging to the Borough; also,to ask what are the total.? liabilities of the borough on August 31." He and other new members of the Council wished f6r the information; ! He trusted the officers of the Council would be able to tell them whut they wanted to know.
