Calcotta, August 4. i lutelligence has l>een received from Afghanistan that Ayoub Khan has advanced to' Merkarez, for the purpose of attacking the British troops under' General iPhayro', which reached Chamau recently from Bolan Pass on the way to reinforce General Burrows at Candahar, but were unable to proceed, owing to the disturbed state of thecauntry. It is further stated that Ayonb is sending a strong force to intercept the supplies from Bolan Pass, Orders hare been given to General Roberts to inarch with the Northern Division of the British army in Afghanistan, numbering 10,000 men,lo'the relief of General Burrows at Candahar. General Roberts has further been 1 ordered to act in conjunction, with the troops nnder Generals Phayree and Sandeman from Bolan Pass so that the combined forces may operate againat Ayoub Khar,' > r It now transpires that the telegraph line between Cabul and the frontier was not cut by hostile tribes aa at first supposed, but was interrupted from sortie other cause.
