The Akaroa Mail. TUESDAY, JUNE 22.

'Our l 'eaders will perceive that the programme to be carried out at the concert in the <oddft Hows Hall, to-morrow evening, in behalf o. * Pe^ l "' B Church, appears in our ad'vertis !n Gf columns, and they will doubtless agrt c vith the remarks we have Already submit teu , —that it is a rich and vivied one. Tin, ' of the c ° m P os ers a sufficient g> 'arantee of the excellence of a U the n&usic t ° lie Presented, besides the fittt that nearlj ' all the , numbers arfe ' general favorites. V 7 «\ understand that aesidaoae" practice has place,, and that the -performers are.. ; prepared with'their respective shares of the entertainment.- The'excelle. of the pro-; jectfed performance, the objt <* for-'which' it takes place, , and the lo> v P noes of admission, should! certainly m fL '«* to draw a crowded house. Tickets can be procured at the various stoTes, and by sii PJRjy 1 themselves with visitors will ?ahy crush or delay at the door. ' , ;

Wβ.regret to havo to-, record the de of one of the pioneer settlers of Akaro.a. Mrs Mary, relict of ther late Mr Heiiij, ' Magee (who it will be remembered died some twenty-seven yefi.rs ago) departed this life on Friday last, rfhe 27th inst. Sh<» was aged seventy-two, .and .had been a , resident in Akaroa over twe.nty-nine years. Up to quite lately she had b«een enjoying very good health, but the severe , shook, to her system occasioned by healing of the sudden death of herdaughter, .Mrs Nicol M'Doriald, so told upon her in her old age that she was unable to withstand it. We express our best sympathies with Jier bereaved friends and relatives.

Our attention has been, called, to the fact that two large heaps of rubbish which hftve been cleared out of the gutters, have been carefully placed in the roadway of Bruce's Terrace, close to its junction with Au.brey street. Considering that the Borough by-laws make it a punishable offenco to deposit any goods or niateHaj" of any kind on any roadway or footpath, it is somewhat inconsistent that, this 1 decided obstruction should be. caused by those in the employ of the Council, and that the latter should take no steps/to abate the nuisance. What a melancholy sight would be afforded by a-Mayor being summoned for a breach of his own by-laws t

A fatal accident occurred on Saturday last to,two young men at Waikerakikari. It- appears they were shipping timber to the E. U. Cameron, and through some mismanagement in launching the. boat she capsized. Three men, by name Rowland, Waller, and Kench, were in her. The .two former endeavoured to swim to shore through the surf, which is very rough at this point, and perished in the_ attempt. The last-named .one stuck to the boat and was rescued. We learn that both of tire deceased are single men. A Coroner's inquest was to have been held yesterday) but we suppose the Coroner must have a wholesome honor of a wet skin, «as he, at any rate, preferred to allow the job to stand over for a finer day.'

We have re'eeived. from the publishers and proprietors, Messrs G.. R. West and C 0.,. Princess street, Duncdin, a .copy of Mr H. G. Guoch's favorite -song," Swing on, old pendulum." It has been admirably lithographed. at the Otago. Daily Times office.

We find that little or no interest was taken in the nomination of Auditors held on Friday last. Thanks to one or two individuals in the. town who bestirred them, selves in the matter, two candidates were induced to allow themselves to be nominated, and were consequently declared duly elected. They were. Messrs .S! Watkins and A. Nicholls. ;

An accident of a most serious nature

happened to Mrs Fairbrass on Friday evening last. This lady was returning home on horseback from a visit she had been paying to her friends in German Bay, when, on commencing the descent of the hill on the old "Le Bon's Bay road, her horse stumbled and threw her violently to the ground, where; she lay, according to the best of her beliet, for an hour and a half in a state of insensibility. ' She was then picked up and assisted home by Mr Thomas Welch, who happened to be passing by. vWe are happy,to state that beyond a severe shaking and a nasty .bruise over the left eye, Mrs Fairbrass has experienced no further effects from her fall. Surely, after the number of accidents that have occurred upon this same road, and the,- complaints made ; about .it; the Road; Bpjird will take active steps towards repairing it:

Respecting & late case heard before the Akaroa Bench the Canterbury Times has the following:—An Akaroa Councillor's case has supplied a warning to all members of local bodies voting or taking .part-in proceedingss in which they are interested. The gentleman in question, a Mr Wiggins, was interested as the pro. prietor of the newspaper in which the work of which he discussed the pros and cons was advertised. In principle the decision against Mr Wiggins was correct. But as that gentleman's paper was the only one in the town, and as the work in question must .have advertised; whether he was present or not, the fine of £10, for each of two cases, must decidedly be considered excessive. •" Poor Mr Wiggins. For cruel decisions commend us to Benches in small places.
