LITTLE RIVER.
(from our own correspondent.)
A public meeting is to be held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening nextto consider the position of the Recreation Ground, and the necessity of fencing in the Cemetery ground forthwith. The Recreation Ground Committee have selected, but in consequence of it requiring to be surveyed, have not yet completed the purchase of a piece of land immediately adjoining the Cemetery ground, but why " no fellah can tell." It has been said that an Englishman takes his pleasure sorrowfully, and takiwg into consideration the site chosen by the Recreation Committee, in this case, he could hardly do otherwise. There are other objections tothe site, but these no doubt will be fully ventilated at the meeting. A contract for fenoing in the Cemetery ground was let some time ago, but a commencement has. not yet been made ; no doubt the contractors are waiting for the survey of the Recreation ground. Nothing haß yet been done as to a Telegraph, &o. station here. Hardly a day passes without some visitor enquiring for the telegraph office, and when they are informed there is not one here, they simplyexpress astonishment and surprise at the apathy of the residents here. As I said before, there cannot be the least doubt about its paying, and it is time the inhabitants* here bestired themselves in the matter.
A meeting of the Race Committee was held at Olphert's on Saturday evening last, when the accounts were gone into, and the result shows that when some outstanding subscriptions come in, there will be a balance of something like £J5 to commence next year's racing with. It is < the intention of the committee to greatly improve the course before the next races by doing away with the sharp turns on it, and if possible to enlarge it. It is also the intention ot the Committee at the suggestion of Host Olphert next year to throw
open for competition the publican and refreshment booth ho ns to give all thf> bonifaceson the Pcrinsnla and elsewhere a chance. This will do away with the evidently wrong impression that these races are got up almost solely for the benefit of one person. There is as yet no sign of the erection of the new pound. This, I believe, is in consequence of the ground not yet having been conveyed to the Road Board. lam informed on the best authority that the delay is caused by the dihitoriness of the lawyers employed to prepare the necessary •deeds.
