AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the above Council was held at their Chambers, Balguerie street, on Wednesday last, the 27th instant. Present: Crs Pcnlington, Cullen, Bruce, Kissel, and Henning. EXPLANATION. Prior to the reading of the minutes of the preceding ordinary meeting, the Clerk stated that he had been requested by Cr Wiggins (who, owing , to the unfortunate accident he had met with, was unable to be in attendance), to state that he had expressed a wish that the minutes of the special meeting held on May IS, at which he had been elected Mayor pro tern, be not recorded, as in his opinion the Act had not been complied with, viz., a quorum not being present, arid therefore his election to the chair was not legal and wished the Council to elect another councillor to that office. On the above statement being made, Or Henning proposed, and Cr Cullen seconded —"That Cγ Penlington be appointed temporarily to fill that office until the election of a new Mayor." Carried. Cr Pcnlington accordingly took the chair. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeiing were rend and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following outward correspondence was next read :— A letter to the Colonial Secretary, Wellington, respecting a requeyt for an explanation re reduction from subsidies. To J. D. Garwood, Esq., calling upon him to fulfil the terms of his bond for security for Town Clerk, Mr K. M. Barry. The inward correspondence next followed, consisting of a letter from, the Secretary of the Akaroa Domain Board, asking the Council to have the gorso cut on the Borough side of the boundary of the Domain. On the motion of Cr Kenning, seconded by Cr Cullen, it was resolved that Mr Watkins be written to, informing him that the Council would take the matter into consideration so soon as they were in funds. REPORTS OV COMMITTEES. Cr Cullen, in the absence of the Chairman of the Lighting Committee, reported that certain of the town lamps were somewhat damaged during the Jute rough weather, and he bad aiitliorired tho repairing of the same. The Council approved of the step.
