PENINSULA COMPENSATION CLAIMS.
To the Editor of the Afaroa Mail
Sir, —I received to-day the enclosed letter from the Under Secretary for Public Works, respecting claims for compensation for land taken for public roads on the Peninsula ; and as there are a number of land owners whose claims have' not yet been settled, I beg you will publish this letter for their information. .';'.■ Yours, &c, W. MONTGOMERY.
Christchurch, May 1, 1880. " Public Works Office, ; " Wellington, 29th April, 1880. « Sir,—l am directed by the Minister for Public Work's to inform you in reference to your letter of the 30th March that the deed of Mr Leonard's is now with the Registrar.at Christchurch, and as soon as received from him the amount due to him will be paid. Under ordinary circumstances the Registrar's receipt would be sufficient, but the Minister has waited for the deed with a view to satisfy queries that will in all probability be raised by the Audit, this claim being i\\& first of the series. The Minister is endeavoring to expedite the matter. "The Surveyor-General is in communjcation with Mr Baker, relative to Mr Brown's claim. " I have the honor to be, Sir, ■ "Your obpdient servant, "John Knowles " Under Secretary for Public Works. " W. Montgomery, Esq., M.H.R., Christchurch. '.1..'. " 30th April, 1880. " P S.—Since the above was written it has been thought that if the money was imprested to Mr Ollivier at Christchuroh, who is thoroughly conversant with the whole of tbe. transactions, he might see the deeds in the Registrar's office, and so prevent delay. The Minister has accordingly imprested him with that object. , bJ . "J. K."
