LITTLE RIVER.
(FBOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) I cannot refrain from referring to the late inquest here, the verdict of the jury having caused considerable discussion in the district; many of the people evidently m did, could, or would not understand it. For the information of the public I give you the verdict as first given to the Coroner by the Chairman of the Jury ; it stood as followB: "The verdict is ;<•" 'Excusable homicide' nnd the; excuse is, , ' that the pistol with which the child was killed had been allowed, as an ordinary thing, to lie about the house unloaded, until a day or so before the child was killed, when it was loaded without the inmates of the house teing made acquainted* with the fact; as admitted by Mr Hugh * Buchanan in his evidence. " If any one will take the trouble to look into " Eoscoe on Evidence.-'lliey will thera see Excus- ~, able homicide explained; and, I for one*' cannot see how the jury l , with the evidence
they bjid. before them, could find any other vsrdict. . ' ' $ There is some talk of again applying to Govejmment to establish a Telegraph Stationiand also a money order office in connection with the post office here. There cen be no doubt about its paying, and it is to be hoped that the matter will be earnestly taken in hand by the residents here and all work together with' a will so as to speedily make the matter an accomplished fact. By-the-bye, the complaints as to the management of the present post office are very numerous and deep, if ■not loud. If half of what I hear is only true it is quite time the matter was enquired into. . A petition, having for its object the -election of a bridge instead of making a ford over the river where a new road is being formed leading from the main Akaroa road towards the Western Valley, ;is in course of signature, and up to the present time numerously signed. It is to be presented to the Little River Road Board on Monday next, the 3rd proximo ;■ and it ieto be hoped the Board will grant the •request, as there can be no doubt that it -would greatly benefit, the district. • ; ■'
