LITTLE RIVER RECREATION GROUND.
To the Editor of the Akaroa]Mail. Sir,—Will you kindly give publicity to the following through the columns of your paper, and oblige Yours &c, G. R^JOBLIN. Mr G. R. Joblin. g ]Ui —Will you kindly favour the public in this valley by making known what has been done in the matter of the Recreation Ground. Sometime ago we noticed that a sum of money had been handed over by the County Council, and we are naturally anxious to be informed how the same has been applied, or if. it is in any Bank idle. We would suggest a public meeting being called, as an explanation is, in our humble opinion, undeniably due. Meanwhile we are, Sir, Yours obediently, NOAH WALTERS, JOHN OLPHERT, C. RANKIN, THOMAS HOLT, and 27 others. Little River, - April 1,1880. To Messrs Noah Walteits, John Olphert, C. Rankin,Thomas Holt, and 27 others. Gentlkmen,—Your letter, dated the Ist instant, addressed., to me by Mr A. D. Allan, reached me on the llth. I have delayed replying thereto, till 1 had an opportunity of seeing Mr Hay, surveyor. The information you seek relating to the proceedings of the Recreation Ground Committee has already been duly recorded in the Akauoa Mail and the Christchurch papers ; but I will summarise it here : — In response to the application of the Committee, the County Council granted the sum of £57 2s lOd. Thereupon the Committee \entered into an agreement to purchase a portion of section No. 4263, dtuate- at the north of the Maori reserve. Some difficulty lias been experienced in preparing the necessary legal documents, arising from the absence of definite tails in relation to the survey ; and the .solicitors (Messrs Garrick and Cowlishaw), advised a special survey. As this proceeding would have absorbed a large proportion of the grant, the Committee hesitated in resorting to it; and I. as Chairman, applied on behalf of the Committee to Mr Baker, Chief Surveyor, for permission for Mr Hay to make the needed survey. The request was kindly assented to, and Mr Hay has received instructions to survoy the block. 16aw this gentleman on Saturday, and he informed me that the work should be done without any unnecessary delay. When the survey is made, an opportunity will be offered for the examination, by the public, of the acquisition, and a public meeting will be called.
With reference to the grant of ££7 2s 10d, it wis placed at the disposal of tho Committee in December last, and remains intact. When the necessary deeds are prepared, the Committee will withdraw it from the custody of the Council.
I have the honor to subscribe myself,
Yours, &c,
Geo. K. JOBL T N, Chairman Recreation Ground Committee Little River, April 20th, 1880.
