The homeward mails via Brindisi, •which left New Zealand in February, were delivered to-day.

The Bank of England weekly returns show the total reserve of notes and bullion, to be £16,600,000, being over £1,000,000 less than last week.

The election for Falmouth took place to-day. Sir Julius Vogel was a candidate, but was rejected.

April 3.

The Liberals have gained 19 seats to-day ; the total numbers gained being 50 by the Liberals, and 20 by the Conservatives. The sitting members for Lambeth and Tower Hamlets have been re-elected. Two Liberals have been elected ior Marylebone by large majorities. Mr Bradlaugh, a Radical candidate, has been elected by a large majority for Northampton. The right Hon. James Lowther, Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland has been defeated by a small majority for York. A change of Ministery is considered inevitable, and the Times publishes a paragraph stating that it is quite probable that Lord Granville will form a Ministry.

The relations iietween Russia and China are considered to bo very critical, the latter having declined a ratification of the treaty releasing Russia from rest iring Ivuldja. A report is also current that Chinese troops have crossed the River Amoor, thereby constituting open hostility to Russia.
