A REJOINDER.
To the Editor oj the Alcaroa Mail. ,
I notice in your paper ot the 30th ult., a letter signed by Mr Shadbolt, in which he gives a list of the stewards of the late Little River Races, but he does not state that four of those gentlemen were absent, namely, Messrs Lee, Williams, Wiggins, and Hay; neither does he mention anything about one of the stewards present, who was backing the horse that came in second to the amount of 2 to 1, and wanted the rider, after the race, to enter a protest against Mr Grant's mare, and upon his declining to do so he did it himself. Now, sir, the rider of Bismarck has stated, and is prepared to prove that it was the horse he rode, and not the one owned by Mr Grant and which I rode, that went outside the post. And I may also add that the Secretary told Mr Grant, after some of the stewards had consulted, that there was no evidence to prove that his mare went off the course, but that as some horse did, it was considered best to run it over again. I am well aware that in the great majority of cases the stewards arrive at correct decisions, but I maintain that in this case the weight of evidence was in favor of Mr Grant's horse, and had not outside evidence been refused, it would have been altogether imcontestable.
I am, Yours &c,
J. H. WALLACE.
