CHRISTCHURCH RACES.

The Autumn Meeting of the CanterburyJockey Club took place on Tuesday and Wednesday last. The attendance on the first day was very good, and fair on tha second. The chief novelty observable on the course was the totalisator, or machine for recording sweepstakes. Two of these instruments were on the ground — one within, and the other without the enclosure. The amount of money passed through these machines during the day waa £2601, the ten per cent, profit thereon being divided between the proprietors and the C.J.C. The Times says: —"As a matter of course, the totalisators, from their very novelty, attracted a large share of attention, and it yet remains to beproved 'that the era of their popularity, will be a brief one. So far as the present meeting is concerned, the totalisator has thinned the ranks of the men hungry for gain, and of the great body of the attending public, not a soul appeared one whit the worse. > The following is the result of the van- • ous events:— First Day.
