LITTLE RIVER V. AKAROA.
A match between the above clubs took place yesterday in Mr Baker's paddock at French Farm., The weather was delightful, and a considerable number of spectators were present on the occasion. A marquee was erected on the ground, and an excellent cold lunch was provided. Mr and Mrs Habn catered for the cricketers, and the spread provided gave every satisfaction. The Rev Mr Stocker officiated on this occasion as captain of the Akaroa * team. We were not informed who had charge of the visitors.
Play commenced at about half-past eleven. Little Kivor won the toss, and sent their opponents to the wicket. Wood and Hnssey first assumed the bat, to the bowling of 11. Radford and W. Reynolds. The bowling was excellent, and could not be trifled with by any means. The bowlerSjWhilo delivering fairly swift balls, did not sacrifice accuracy to speed. We have : not space for a detailed report of liow the game proceeded, but may remark, in brief, that the bowling of the Little Eiver team was excellent, especially that of the two above named. Their fielding in general was not so good, and they allowed their opponents to " steal" a.good many runs. The Akaroa team worked better together than might have been ex-; pected, considering that as yet they have not played together as an eleven. In one respect-especially their opponents might take a lesson from them, and that is their smartness in scoring a run whenever there was the glroat of &<hetnoe. T-his "was especially noticeable while lleeere Baker and Barker were" at'the wiokete. The field were more than once taken by surprise by a run being attempted when it wae not in the least expected. As will be seen by the results of the first inninge of each team, the Hiittle River bad an up-hill game to play, when they went to tbe wickete for the second time. They stuck to it pluckSly, however, and at one time it seemed as if they were going to maintain their ground long enough to reduce the match to a draw. The fates, however, were against them, and, as will be seen, Akaroa was victorious by fifty runs. Play concluded a few minutes before half -past five # The following are the scores :— >'■': Akahoa.
