Stewards—Messrs S. Lee, W. Birdling, Senr., C. Haylock, J. Gebbie,;W. D. Gebbie, E. Hay, H. D. Buchanan, A. G. Wiggins, Joseph Judge, W. Coop, F. Birdling. Judge—W. Birdling, Senr. Starter—S. Johnson. Clerk of scales and handicapper J. Duxbury. Clerk of course—G. A. Birdling. Hon Secretary—W. Birdling, Junr. These races were held on Friday last on the course, near the Beach Arms Hotel, between Lake. Forsyth and Ellesmere. Here the weather was anything but tempting, the wind blowing half a gale and rain threatening. However about eleven o,clock tlie weather cleared up and was everything that could be desired. The attendance was fair, but nothing to be compared with that of former years, which, in a great measure, is to be accounted for by reason of the number of race meetings held in the neighbourhood, at which the same horses have run. The racing commenced punctually at one o'clock with the maiden plate, when four Peninsula bred horses came to the post. The various events were got off with most commendable punctuality, and officials were one and all most assiduous in making the meeting pass off well. Mr Wascoe gave every satisfaction as carterer. The following are details of the different events: — Maiden Plate of 10 soys.—One mile. Mr J. Castle's b g Rimu, by Bantam, 4yrs, 9st, carried 9st 61b (J. Castle, 3""-) . ». 1 Mr J. Gebbie's br g Kasper 11., 3yrs, Bst 21b (Knight) 2 Mr G. M. M'Kay's eh g Charlie, 4yrs, 9st (W. Shadbolt) 3 Mr T. Sheenan's eh f Firefly, 3yrs, Bst 21b, carried lOst 21b (owner) ... 0 Charlie went away with the lead, Kasper and Rimu collaring him in about a quarter of a mile. The two latter raced very closely, Rimu winning by a length. Hurdle Race of 15 soys.—Two miles. Mr B. Shadbolt's br h Eclat, by Camden, 6 yrs, lOst 101b (A. Shadbolt) 1 Mr T. Sheenan's eh g Tawera, aged, lOst 12lb (owner) ... 2 Mr E. Barrett's br m Venture, aged, lOst (Knight) ... 3 Mr F. Birdling's b g Unknown, 5 yrs, 9st (Lelievre) 4 I A fine race between Eclat and Tawera. Venture baulked at the third jump, and though she pulled up well, was not able to I catch the leaders. Won by a couple of lengths. Publicans' Purse of 10 soys. One mile and a half. Mr J. Castle's b m Malvina, by Bantam, syrs, Bst 121b (Wallace) ... 1 Mr Shad holt's br h Eclat, 6yrs, 9st, carried lOst 31b (A. Shadbolt) ... 2 Mr J. Judge's br g Brown Boy, 3yrs, 7st 101b (Knight) 3 Mr J. Gebbie's br g Kasper 11., 3yrs, 7st 101b, was scratched. The moment the flag fell, Malvina and Eclat cut out the running at a great pace. At a mile from the start, Malvina drew ahead, and won easily. Eclat's extra weight of 171b no doubt affected the result. Peninsula Handicap of 15 soys; second horse to receive 2 boys from stakes. About 2 miles. Mr J. M'Causland's b g Orange Peel, Gyrs, 9st 41b (Bell) 1 Mr T. Sheehan's c g Tawera, aged, 9st 91b (owner) 2 Mr B. Shadbolt's br c Blue Ribbon, 3 yrs, Bst (A. Shadbolt) 3 The race was between the first two. Orange Peel won easily. Consolation Stakes of 8 soys.—One mile. Won by Mr E. Barrett's br m Venture, beating Tawera, Blue Ribbon, and Charlie. A hack race, for which nine horses started, terminated the day's proceedings. There was nothing remarkable about the race, except a somewhat singular decision of the stewards regarding a protest made by the owner of the second horse. We have received a letter on the subject, which is unavoidably hold over till our next issue.
