AKAROA RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Friday, Feb. 27. (Before J. Aylmer, Esq.,R.M.) LIGHT-WEIGHT BREAD.

Campbell Brown was charged with selling bread that was short in weight.

Sergeant Willis deposed to having purchased two loaves at defendant's shop. The 41b loaf was 5f oz short weight, and the 21b loaf was 4 oz short. They had both lost more than this in weight since he had bought them. Defendant pleaded that the loaves were not sold by weight, but at so much per loaf.

The Bench pointed out that he had no right to sell otherwise than by weight. He would be fined 20s and costs. If he were brought up again on a similar charge the full penalty would be inflicted.

Charles trutberlet was charged with the same offence.

The evidence in this case disclosed the fact that defendant had sold a 41b loaf which was 3 oz short, and a 21b loaf 1 oz deficient in weight.

The defence was practically the same as the last case, but defendant also maintained that the loaves were " fancy " bread on the ground that some people " fancied" it.

Notwithstanding this ingenious defence, defendant was also mulcted in 20s and costs, and cautioned ac to the future.

After hearing two unimportant civil cases, the Court adjourned.
