AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD
Tho annual meeting of the ratepayers of the above Road District was held on Satuiday last, at the Road Board office, Duvauchelle's Bay.
Mr E. Chappell (Chairman of the Road Board) occupied the chair, and read the statement of receipts and expenditure for the late year, also statement of assets and liabilities as on January 1, 1880. These statements appear elsewhere.
Mr M'Kay wished to ask a question regarding the expenditure on the Mt. Bossu road. He peceived that over £1500 had been spent on the road. He avouUl like to know whether the County Council had given the Board a starting point. He thought that the money had been spent in the wrong place.
Messrs Williams and M\Donald explained the state of the case.
Mr L. Libeau wished to know what had been done with regard to the stoppage of the Duvauchelle's Bay road.
The Clerk explained that the matter was in progress, and that he only required the copies of certain papers to forward the the memorial to the Government.
Mr Piper wanted to knoAv what was the state of the case with regard to Bell's road. He understood that the sum of £80 had been paid and nothing received for it.
The Chairman stated that it had been decided to leave the matter over till Mr Inman's return. Mr Piper did not know whether there was any evidence that Mr Inman was about to return to the colony. Ultimately it was arranged that Mr Inman should be written to on the subject. A conversational discussion then ensued, in which Messrs Williams, M'Kay and Piper took the principal parts. On the motion of Mr Hunt, seconded by Mr Jos. Libeau, the accounts as read were adopted. STOPPAGE OF ROAD THROUGH" RHODES' FLAT. A meeting of ratepapers was then held to consider the question of closing the above road. Mr Williams proposed that the road in question be closed. Mr S. Hunt seconded the motion. On tho Chairman putting the motion, four hands were held up for it, and none against it. The Chairman therefore declared the motion carried, and the meeting closed. Road Board Meeting. The ordinary meeting of the Road Board was then held. Present—Messrs Chappell (in the chair), M'Donald, Shadbolt, Williams and Piper. INTERVIEWS. Mr S. Hunt waited on the Board to ask them to erect a bridge in French Farm Valley. It was arranged that the Clerk should make a plan of the bridge required, and Mr Hunt was requested to make an offer to the Board with regard to erecting it. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. ■Letters were read— From Mr A. Watkins, Chairman of the Wainui School Committee, offering the use of the schoolroom as a polling place. From Mr R. Close, complaining of a drain from Mr Castle's land, conveying offensive matter into his well.
The Clerk was ordered to give notice to have the nuisance abated at once, in default to take proceedings. From Mr W. Sims, as agent for Mr J. 11. Mander, requesting payment of £10, already voted to the latter. To be informed that the money would be paid as soon as the Board were in funds. From Mr R. Newton, asking the Board to send surveyors to lay off a road to section 12120, and complaining that Mr Checkley had fenced in half the road. The Clerk had already written to Mr Newton, stating that the Board could not interfere in such questions, and that he „had his remedy against Mr Chock le}*. From Hall and Sweeney, asking for a month's leave of absence for ''grass seeding." Granted. From Mr E. Harrington, drawing atteutention to the bad state of the road leading to his property in German Bay. The work was ordered to be placed "on the list." Fiom Mr T. Martindale, complaining that the Board had not f uliilledtheir agreement with him in not providing him with the deeds of the land conveyed to him from Mons J. Libeau. It was agreed that no such promise had been made. MISCELLANEOUS work. A report was read from Mr J. Duxbury on the various works in progress, in which | he stated that some of them were, aus- i ponded on aecouni of the giasi -cod sea- ' son. Nalder, amounting to £15 3s 2d, but its consideration was postponed, it being considered that some of the items were not chargeable to the Board. The Board then adjourned till Saturday, February 21.
