AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Wednesday, Jan. 21. A meeting of this Council was held at their offices, Balguerie street, on the above date. Present—His Worship tho Mayor (in the chair), Crs Kissel, Chadwick, Cullen, Armstrong, O'lleilly, and Wig-gins. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. j correspondence. J The Clerk read the outward correspondence. Letters were read— From tho Mayor of Ashburton, intimating that the first meeting of the Municipal Association would take place at Christchurch on Wednesday, tho 28th inst, and hoping that delegates from this Council would be present. Cr Wiggins was appointed a delegate to represent the Council at the proposed Association. From Mr J. Beecher, asking permission to erect a marquee on the reserve in front of Bruce's Hotel for the accommodation of the Maoris expected to arrive during next week. Permission was granted. From Messrs Edmiston Bros, and Gundry, enclosing account sales of letting one section of the Ashburton Reserves, and cheque for £14 13s 6d. The auctioneers further recommended that the reserves be put up again at the end of February. It was resolved that the agents be instructed to offer the reserves again in February, the sale to be advertised in the local papers, and in the Canterbury Times and Weekly Press. FINANCE. In the absence of the Chairman of the Finance Committee, his Worship reported that tho overdraft was something under £130. In answer to Cr Cullen, his Worship stated that there was about £71 due for rates. A long conversational discussion ensued as to the collection of these rates. It was resolved that the Clerk should make a house to bouse visitation, stating if not paid at once, ratepayers would be summonsed. VANGIONI'S CORNER. Cr O'Reilly called attention to the fact of a nuisance existing at the above spot. Il had been reported that a case of typhoid fever had arisen in Akaroa. Ho knew tho Council had no money in hand, but could they not take these necessary works in hand, and pay for them at some future date. He wished to bring it under the notice of the Sanitary Committee. On the motion of Cr Cullen, Cr, Kissel was appointed Chairman of the Sanitary Committee, and the Committee was instructed to report on the matter. Cr Armstrong objected to anything being done at the spot, referred to unless something was also done in Balguerie street, i He thought the one was quite as bad as the other. Cr O'Reilly, in reply, maintained that tho drain in Balguerie street was by no means offensive as compared with that on the beach which he had referred to. Cr Cullen's motion was carried. LIGHTING. Or Cullen thought it was very hard that the lamplighter should not receive his

He would sugge-Wjat they should close their office three days a week, and save half the salary of the clerk. His Worship thought that notice of motion should be given on such a subject, if it were .to be considered. CjjCullen concurred in the opinion expreJßd by his Worship. Cw'Reilly gave notice that at the next meeting be should move—"That this Council is of opinion that the Clerk's salary and office expenditure be reduced, and that the hours of office time be reduced accordingly." The Council then adjourned.
