Tauranga, Jan. 13.
While the steamer Penguin, from Auckland,, was coming up this morning she was blown on to a sand bank, opposite to where the Taupo lies, by a strong gale. The steamer Staffa was immediately despatched to her assistance, and on arriving at the spot took on board the passengers and mails and brought them to town safely. Efforts were then made to get her off, which were successful, and the vessel is now riding at anchor in the harbour. She sustained no injury, and should the weather moderate, will leave for the South this evening. Jan. 14. The Penguin got off the sand hillock at 11 this morning, with the assistance of the tender Staffa. No damage has been done, not even the cargo or coal has been removed. New Plymouth, Jan. 14. The price of grass seed has fallen considerably since last season; 10,000 bushels have been offered and refused at 3d per lb. It is said that the price of grass seed will be as low as this season* Grahamstown, Jan. 14. After a two days' trial the case of Eliza Jane Thomson v. the Australian Mutual Provident Society came to a conclusion to-day. It was an action, claim £200, being the amount of policy on the life of plaintiff's husband. The policy was not delivered, but the life had been accepted, and a receipt given for a half year's premium. The defence was that the life had been accepted through fraudulent concealment and untruthfulness. The case was tried in the District Court before Judge Weston and a special jury of four, Thirty-seven issues were submitted to the jury, who, after four hours' deliberation, returned a verdict for the plaintiff for the amount claimed. Notice of appeal was given.
