BOROUGH FINANCE.

To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail.

Sir, —A better example of the " save me from' 5 my friends " • style of defence could hardly be eppceived than that of a letter signed (< Win. Meech," in your issue of Dec. 9, who takes upon himself to answer what he is pleased T to call:" several Jciaps in regard to the, .finance./.and .accounts of the Borough of Akaroa." My, previous letter was written entirely on general grounds, and had no reference to any particular individual—a position which, if the '' Win. Meech" who contested the recent Mayoral election is the same person who signs the letter referred to, ,is quite>inca 7 pablo of understanding. The only piece of real information, conveyed in the letter is, the statement that the writer was Chair

man of the Finance Committee at a certain date. That may or may not be true, but what certainly is not true ia the statement that certain moneys were paid into, the corporation account* on the>4th of October last. If the Chairman of the Finance Committee does not know any better, I may inform himfthat part,of the cash in the Clerk's hands on the day of audit was an admitted error "of £2 in addition, and for which the Clerk) offered the Auditors his cheque, > and this was Miscovared six weeks' after the* imaginary payment into" the Bank. What wouldijf fair to all concerned is the publication of the balancesheet and the Auditors' report, as suggested in my first letter. If Mr Meech had done this instead of indulging in a little bit of trite morality, he would have shown the public that he was capable of understandingti»e„ duties, ot a. Finance Committee Chairman, and had some claim on those electors he has so: often vainly.tried to woo."' If MrrMeech's letter is'Ta sample of all Borough He has so, long; assisted to mis- | manage, he at least has had the sense to I retire from ; the scjene./ «'■■■' Yours, &c, !

, ~AHOTHEK I^TEP^R
