PARLIAMENTARY ITEMS.

The great event in the House of Kepresentatives on Friday was the .public announcement of the fact that f6ur of the Auckland members had deserted their party, and gone ovet to the* Government. A telegram from our Wellington correspondent, published in our last issue, speaks of this as an "arrangement likely to be carried, and events have shown that the information furnished by our correspondent wae correct. The members who have changed sides are Messrs Header Wood, Swanson, Col beck, and Hurst. A" debate took place on the subject, when the defection was announced. On the Premier moving the House into Committee of Supply, , ' \'/ Mr George Grey moved an amendment for the production of correspondence' between Ministers and certain Auckland members, about the latter joining their side. '

The Ministry at first objected, but on a division a number of the supporters of Government voted for the proposal, which was carried by a large majority. Mr Reader Wood then Stated that he and Messrs Swanson, Colbeck and Hurst had gone over to the Government, on assurances that the education system would not be disturbed, liberal measures be carried, and a balance struck between Auckland and the rest o£ the Colony. Aa to Public Works expenditure, any balance due to Auckland to be made up from the the present loan. At the evening sitting,, an Imprest Supyly Bill for £300,000 was passed through all its stages. The debate on tHe defection: of the Auckland members was then resumed. ' " v

The only other matter o£ importance that transpired was the decision of the Committee re Sir George Grey's return for Christchurch. This Committee has un* seated Sir George and declared Mr Richardson duly elected by the vote of the Chairman, Mr Fulton. The ayes were—-Messrs Moorhouse, Allwright and M'Caughan; noes--Messrs Tawhai, Stewart, and Colbeck.
