LOCAL MARKETS.

Messrs H. Matson and Co. report on the live stock market, &c. for the week ending Thursday, Oct. 2,1879, as follows. Wool, Sheepskins, Fat, Hides, and Tallow.—On Thursday, at our Canterkury Wool Stores, we held our usual weekly sale of the above. A very large_ number of f ellmongers were present, notwithstanding which biddings were languid and a drop of from 3d to 6d per skin must be chronicled, caused no doubt by the late

cablegrams which were exhibited by some of the buyers present. There cablegrams were no doubt authentic, and if the quotations given in them be correct, viz., lOd to 14|d scoured cross-bred wool, the prices obtained for sheepskins at our sale must be considered highly satisfactory to to the seller, but to the buyer the prices obtained simplyjmean ruination, as no t'ellinoiiger can work skins and ship the wool to England, with any reasonable prospects of profit for his labor and capital invested. A slight depression in the fat market was also noticeable, which we think is only temporary. Our catalogue comprises 2949 sheepskins, 92 bags rough fat, 301 hides and calfskins, and one or two packages of tallow. Our quotations are, viz.—Butchers best cross-bred skins, 4s to 4s 5d each ; second quality, 3s to 3s 9d ; medium, la 9d to 2s lid ; inferiar and dry country skins, 4d to Is 6d.
