<>ROM THE LYTTELTON; TIMES.) ~.;,.,...; Wellington,. Oct. 4.* •AiAhe Ministerial caucus this morning 42 were present, Sir George Grey in the chair. The following resolution was. passed unanimously—" That the members present are determined to take all steps necessary to preserve the Liberal party, and will resist coalition, and that they adjourn till Monday,, at eleven o'clock, to enable Ministers to consider further what action shall be taken." ; Oct. 5. With the exception of the publication of the formal resolution passed at yesterday's Ministerial caucus, the utmost secrecy is being maintained as to the proceedings. lam not, however, violating any confidence in saying that .Sir.G. Hall, or for some other members of the Opposition ; but the understanding now is that Mr Hall will be allowed to attempt the formation of a Ministry. If he succeeds, Sir G. Grey will lead the Opposition, but on the defeat of the Ministry, will recommend the Governor to send for either Mr Montgomery or Mr Macandrew, probably the former, himself retiring from the leadership. Several members, whose names it would be injudicious at the present juncture to mention, have intimated their willingness to support the Liberal party so reconstructed, which would give an immediate working majority of six or seven. Although at the caucus there was a difference of opinion as to the above details, before breaking up it was unanimously decided to act in concert in any plan finally decided on
