I The s.s. Stella arrived in harbor yesterday from Lyttelton, bringing the lighting apparatus for the Akaroa lighthouse. After landing the machinery she sailed again for Wellington. A man named Jones, who has been staying in Akaroa for some weeks past, was arrested last evening-on telegraphic information of a warrant' having been issued against him in Christchurch charging him with the crime of forgery. -' The new contractor for the lighting of Akaroa seems determined to make his contract a payable one, if saying kerosene will do so. We balieve that in.terras of his specification there' are seven liays in each four weeks on which he is not bound to light the lamps, viz., five days before the full moon and one after. On Wednesday evening, however, the town was left unlighted, the contractor thus taking six days before the full moon. In justice; to the public as well as to other would be contractors the Council should see that the terms of its specifications are adhered to. Those of our readers who are fortunate enough to be liable to the payment of land tax will see by an advertisement which appears elsewhere that the amount for whioh they are assessed is payable on % Wednesday next, October 1. The place of payment is the Post-office, Akaroa.
