The Union Company's fine screw steamer Arawata arrived in harbor here about six a.m. on Sunday last, having in tow the barque Bells. This vessel, it will be remembered, came to grief during the great gale of May .last, and after being abandoned, was sold to Mr C. W. Turner, of Christchurch, who had her floated and patched up to enable her to proceed to •tlie graving dock at Port Chalmers. The s.s. Arawata left Lyttelton on Saturday evening at 7 o'clock with the Bells in tow, but after rounding the Long Look-out the tow line gave way, and it was only after some six hours' exertions of both crews that the steamer was again made fast to the barque, and towed to this port as above, being ten hours on the passage. After communicating with the shore, it was found that nothing in the shape of fresh hawsers could be found here, and the Arawata proceeded on her voyage to Dunedin on Sunday afternoon about four o'clock. The Bells still lies here, waiting, it is understood, the next trip of the Ringarooma, which brings towing gear fit for the-work of taking the barque to Port Chalmers. The Government steamer Stella arrived in harbor early yesterday morning from Cape Saunders for the purpose of picking up Mr Scott, the superintendent of tbe Lighthouse works, on her way to Lyttelton for the lantern and fittings connected therewith for the new light at the Heads here. The Stella returns. here again on Wednesday.. The lantern has been some time in store in Lyttelton, and is, as has been already described, a light of the second order. It.is expected that it will be fixed and. ready to be exhibited in about three months from now.
