AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

Saturday, Aug. 23.

A meeting of this Board Avas held on the above date at their offices, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present— Messrs Chappell (Chairman), Williams, M'Donald, Shadbolt,. and Curry. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. chairman. Mr Chappell, on taking the chair, thanked the members for electing him to that position. Mr Shadbolt proposeda vote of thanks to the late Chairman. The motion Avas seconded by Mr M'Donald, and carried unanimously. Mr Williams thanked them for their recognition of his services. INTERVIEWS. Mr J. H. Wilson waited on the Board on behalf of several ratepayers to complain of the state of the French Farm road. Mr M'Donald Avould like to know what the necessary Avorks would cost. Mr Duxbury could not say. Ultimately the matter was left in Mr Duxbury's hands. , Mr T. Brough waited upon the Board re his contract at the Horseshoe Bend. The Clerk Avas instructed to ascertain the exact amount that had been expended by the Board on this contract, and Mr Brough was informed that the matter, would be attended to at the next meeting. correspondence. An order was received from Mr W. Kenny in favor of Messrs F. Cross and Co. The Board declined to entertain the order. From PaAvson and Co., giving up their contract on the Little River road. The Board agreed to release the Contractors, their deposit to be forfeited. From Mr James Wright, asking for a road from Rhodes' Flat to the Pig Range. The matter was ordered to stand over. From Mr John Wright, correcting.an error in his offer of terms for land re quired for Balgnerie road. From Mr Thomas Brooks re repairs to the road at the Hill Top. It was agreed to leave the matter over till the main road contract Avas let. From the Pigeon Bay Road Board, stating that they were willing to pay half share of progress payments of contract for Summit road as they fall due.

The offer Avas not regarded as satisfactory, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Curry, that the Pigeon Bay Board be informed that if they do mot pay over the half share of Woodill's contract into the Bank, either to the credit of this Board or of a joint account b)' September 4, the Board would cancel the contract. From Wardle and Co., asking, to have their Avork taken off their hands in halfmile sections. It was agreed to take work off their hands. Avhen completed, in mile sections. SURVEYS. On the motion of Mr Williams, it Avas resolved that the Chairman see Mr Fenton and get a list from him of all Avorks in the hands of his firm, complete or incomplete, and also ascertain the Board's indebtedness to them. PAWSON'S VALLEY ROAD.

Mr Shadbolt wrote offering land for a road from the valley road to Mr G. Vogan's section. He would allow the road to be taken on condition of the Board doing the necessary fencing, and conveying the old road to him. Mr Williams proposed that a list be kept of all applications for roads, and when the share of the Land Fund is to hand they be considered with a view to a fair apportionment being made. The proposition was seconded by Mr Curry and carried. With regard to the road in question, it Avas resolved to accept Mr Shadbolt's offer, and that the Clerk of Works be instructed to lay off the road. ONUKU ROAD. The contractor for this road, Mr S. Curregh, wrote, asking for a supply of pipes for culverts. Mr Duxbury was instructed to see to it. ST. JOHN'S ROAD. Mr G. W. Nalder wrote, asking whether there was a written contract between the Board and the late Mr St. John as to this road, and requesting a copy of it, if any were in existence. Mr Nalder to,be informed of the state of the case, as far as the Board was aware of it. GERMAN BAY VALLEY .ROAD. ■.... The Clerk of Works furnished a report on this road. He recommended that it be drained, and, if possible, metalled. WAINUI PASS ROAD. It Avas proposed by Mr Shadbolt and seconded by Mr M'Donald that the offer of i Messrs Fenton and Wilkins, for grading the Wainui Pass road be accepted. Mr Williams thought the matter should stand over for the present. A long conversational discussion ensued, the Chairman supporting Mr Williams' view. Mr Curry proposed as an amendment that the grading of this road be left oyer for the present. The amendment was seconded' by Mr Williams, and declared carried. REPORT OF CLERK OF WORKS.

A report was read from the Clerk of Works. With regard to the road asked for by Mr L. Le Vaillant, he recommended that Le Vaillant be authorized to do the necessary Avork himself. About £12 or £15 Avould do the work. He also asked instructions as to clearing slips, &c., from various roads \A r hich were absolutely necessary. Mr Duxbury Avas anthorized to arrange for Le Vaillant's road up to £10. He Avas was also instructed to prepare specifications for removing the slips of the Onuku and Mount Bossu roads, and to lengthen a culvert on the latter road. UNPAID RATES. It was resolved that the Clerk advertise that all rates unpaid at the end of September shall be sued for. MAINTENANCE OF MAIN ROAD. Mr Shadbolt moved that, in the event of the County Council declining to allocate the funds in their hands, derived fjom the 20 per cent of the Land Fund, they should be requested to take over the maintenance

of the main Christchurch and Akaroa road. The motion did not meet Avith a seconder, most of the members seeming to be of opinion that the step was premature. . payment for stable. It was resolved that Mr Kenny be asked to allow the Board to deduct the amount due by him for stable and fence from his next progress payment. LIABILITIES. On the motion of Mr Williams, it was resolved that a fall, statement of liabilities be laid before tho Board at each meeting. WAIKERAKIKARI boad.
