PIGEON BAY ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of the above Board was held at the Road Board Office, Pigeon Bay, on Saturday, August 2. Present—All the members. Mr Budua complained that, through somo error in the rate roll, he was rated for more land than he owned, even including the property let to two tenants. Letters were also received from Messrs J. B. Barker and W. M'Kay, drawing attention to similar errors regarding the assessment of their property. Messrs Hay, Budua, and the Clerk were deputed to investigate the matter, and report at next meeting. The following correspondence was re-, ceived and read :— From Mr Menzies, requesting the Board to remove the obstructions caused by recent land slips on the M'lntosh Bay road, and stating that Mr M'lntosh's time for keeping said road in repair had expired. The Clerk was directed to reply, requesting Mr Menzies to engage men to clear the road at Board's expense. From Messrs Goodwin and Firmston, stating that the material for erecting the Pound was split, and would be drawn out to the road near Mr J. Goodwin's by the end of -the following week ; also, requesting the Board to depute some competent person to inspect the same.
Messrs Hay and M'Kay were deputed to inspect the material, and pass it, if satis* factory. i From the Akaroa County Council, enclosing a letter from Mr Gillespie, protesting, against the erection of the public Eound oa the proposed site, at the junction of the old and new Akaroa"" roads, and referring said letter to this Board for their consideration. At this point, Mr Gillespie tendered his resignation of his seat on the Board, and withdrew. Mr Gillespie's resignation was accepted, Mr Budua was elected Chairman pro tern., and the Clerk was directed to notify the same to the Bank of New Zealand, Lyttelton. The reading of correspondence was re-, suined, as follows:— ' \ '.' '■ From Mr J. Hunt, reporting that the road leading to his place was in a very had state, and requesting the Board to have the necessary repairs done. The Chairman was authorized to send the daymen to do the work. From Mr IX M'Kay, sen., drawing the Board's attention to the bad state of Fern Hill road, especially the portion of it just bolow his gate. Consideration of this was deferred to next meeting. From residents on the west side of Pigoon Bay, requesting the Board to have the sea-wall, now in course of construction opposite Messrs Hay's residence, extended to a point beyond the red rocks. The Chairman was requested lo instruct Mr Fenton to make a rough estimate of •the cost of proposed work, and report to the Board at its next meeting. From the Akaroa and • Wainui Road Board, repeating the request made in previous letters respecting this Boaid's share of contract on Pigeon Bay Summit road. -- The Clerk was directed to write, stating that this Board still adheres to the resolution stated in its last letter, and that they would pay half-share of all progress payments to be made on certificate of their own Engineer or surveyor. ...... From Mr .Fenton, reporting that Mr Woodill was entitled to a progress payment of £125, inclusive of the £25 already advanced. From the same, advising that the Beach road between Pigeon Bay Hotel and Mr Knudson's be re-constructed throughout, on a level with the breastwork opposite the hotel. A memorial was also presented from Messrs Hay, M'lntosh, and other ratepayers in Holmes' Bay, requesting the Board to have the bush line of road, surveyed by Mr Donald, made available for traffic ; likewise, to have the southern end of said line inspected, and, if found impracticable, to have another line surveyed while the Surveyor was on the ground. The Board informed the memorialists that Mr Fenton would be instructed to snrvey the line past the blue-gums, as requested in the memorial, in continuation of Mr Donald's survey, with a view to connecting the same with the Port Levy road, and completing the communication to the beach.
It having been reported that Mr Ashwin had left the district, the Board resolved to take no further action in the matter of his contract. The Clerk was directed to write a letter to the Akaroa County Council, the same to be signed conjointly by the .Chairmen of this Board and the Port Levy Road Board, requesting , the Council to pay over to the Bank of New Zealand, Lyttelton, to their joint credit the sum of £1000 stg., voted by the General Assembly in 1877, for the survey and construction of a line of main road between Pigeon Bay and Port Levy, the survey of said line of road being now completed from Port Levy to Holmes' Bay. Also, to write to Messrs Joynt and Percival respecting the difficulty with regard to the proposed site for the Pigeon Bay Pound, and requesting a legal opinion on the matter.
