DAY LABOR AND THE ROAD BOARD.

To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail.

Sir, —My notice has been directed to * paragraph which appeared in your journal of August 8, in which you'state that your attention has been' directed to the fact that gangs of men are still to be seen .all over the district making efforts to seem at work, and that at a' recent meeting of the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board i$ was deliberately resolved that aU'day-labor was to be done away with in all cases of works where the cost exceeds £15. And though you assume the Royal " we," of course you think of your own personal self that the resolution of the Board should, at any rate, be respected, and quite right too, Sir. But the following is the resolution referred to :—- "Mr M'Donald proposed, and Mr Chappell seconded, that the Clerk of Works stop day labor on such works as will take £15 to complete, and to call tenders for the works which demand immediate attention except bridges and culverts.—Carried."

Dear Mr Editor, as you have assumed the post of Mentor in opposition to my masters, 1 have very humbly to assure your Importance that the above resolution has not only been respected, but faithfully carried out, and I shall be very happy to fulfil any other commands which you may desire to have executed if you will kindly forward me your resolution, either whole or in part, alter having sifted any other vague rumors which you may deem necessary for your purpose ; but, dear Mr Editor, be very careful in your hunting excursions that your hounds are in good condition, or you may one day find the game more than, a match for your pack. Humbly waiting your instructions, I remain, yours &c, . J. D.
