FROM THE LYTTELTON TIMES,

" Christchurch, Thursday Evening,

LOCAL MARKETS,

h Messrs H. Matsonand Co. report on the livestock market, &c, for the week ending Thursday July 3. as follows:— Live Stock, &c—The heavy weather we have experienced since last week's sale, and the extensive damage done to- both road and railway, had the effect of causing a considerable falling off in the supply of mutton af yesterday's market, only 2626 sheep being yarded for the day. Notwithstanding this, the anticipation that a rise in price would be the result was not borne out, as with scarcely an average attendance of buyers, values ruled about the same as last week, with a quick sale for prime quality, inferior passing off sluggishly. Taken throughout, the sheep sales may be considered a success, and prices satisfactory, nearly every line, being cleared. The cattle market presented a heavy supply of beef of. varied quality, for the best of which there was a marked improvement in values over last week's transactions. The bulk of the fat cattle now brought to hand are far from being as well grazed or of the quality they should be, and these suffer severely in price, the trade being careless of operating excepting at very low rates ; and vendors in selecting their cattle for this market would do well to bear this fact in mind. There were a fair number of stores penned, but salesmen had great difficulty in quitting at any price. For bona fide good dairy cows, early springers, cows, and calves, &c, there is a considerable inquiry, with very few on offer. The totals yarded for the day comprised 192 hsad of cattle, 2626 sheep, and 99 pigs, of which our entry included 133 head of cattle, 1230 sheep.

In sheep, our principal sales were 43 extra heavy weight cross-breds at 15s. 40 mixed do at lis 3d, 129 at Us 3d, 38 at 9s 9d, 38 at 10s 6d, 79 at 13s, 30 at 10s, 101 at 9s Gd, 68 at 8s 3d, 73 at 9s Gd, 37 at 9s 6(t, 50 at 10s 6d, 52 at 9s 6d, 29 all merinos at Bs, 71 do at 6s, 105 shorn hoggets at 6s, 42 cross-bred ewes at Gs lOd, 40 at 7s, 40 at 7s 6d, 35 at 7s 3d. In pigs we cleared our entry—l 4at 40s, 5 at 14s, 7 at 14s, 1 at 50s, &c.

Wool, Sheepskins, Hides, and Tallow : — At the usual weekly sale of the above, held this day at our Canterbury Stores, 2538 sheepskins, 94 bags ' and packages of butcher's rough fat and tallow and 575 ox hides comprised the catalogue. There was an average attendance of fat, skin and hide buyers, and competition was keen and even throughout. A rise of fully sixpence per skin was established over late quotations, with a clearance of all lots. "Owing to the interruption of railway traffic there was a very small supply of country skins, the best of which only realised from 2s to 3s 9d; batchers' best breds made 3s 6d, 3s 9d, 4sr4s-Bd, to 4s 6d; medium, 2s, 2s 4d, 2s Bd,3s, to3s 3d; inferiorandbadly saved, 9d, Is, Is 6d, to is lOd ; best merinos. 2s 4d, 2s Bd, to 3s ; medium, Is 6d, ls 9d, to 2s Id ; inferior, 6d, 9d, ls, to Is 3d; rough fat, best well saved, l£d, lfd, lfd ; inferior and heated, Id to lfd ; ox hides, 3di calfskins, 3d per lb.

. .Canterbury Horse Market, Tattersall's.— Through the inclemency of the weather on Saturday last our weekly sale of horses, &c, was limited in operations, not more than half the number entered being brought to hand. The most noticeable feature in the day's catalogue was a line of heavy draught horses, the property of Mr Mahor, : from the West Coast, and possessing all the chief points of well-bred draught stock, but"" owing to the thin attendance and absence of country buj-ers only one of this consignment, a mare, was disposed of at £53 10s, the remainder being passed in at £55, £48, and £50 each. Of the balance of our.entries we quitted nearly the whole at prices as per description, bearing favorable comparison with rates as ruling of late. Our quotations are—Young sound heavy draught horses, £40, £45, to £55 each; medium'weight, £28, £32 to £37 ; spring cart horses, £2$ to £25 ; well-bred hacks and light harness horses, £16 to £22; ordinary do, £10 to £15 ; weeds, £5 to £8.

On Thursday, at our land salerooms, wo offered, by order of the executors of James Cook, the property kuown as Decanter Bay, comprising 618 acres, together with a nine roomed honse, &c. There was a large attendance, and biddings commenced at £4 per acre, slowly running up to £5 10s, at which price it was withdrawn.-

Bluett and Co. report on their monthly snle held at the Leeston Yards on Friday, June 27, as follows :— The entries for tho. day consisted of 199 head of cattle, 957 sheep, and 46 pigs, out of which we sold 150 head of cattle, 630 sheep, and 26 pigs at the following prices:--Good milch cows at from £7 10s, £9, to £10 10s each ; springing heifers, £7 15s to £10 2s 6d each.
