THE LATE LICENSING MEETING. A CONTRADICTION.
To the Editor of the Akaroa, Mail
Sir, —I was surprised to see by your last Friday's paper, where Mr Olphert stated to the Licensing Commissioners at Akaroa, that I went to his house on the 4th of last April for the purpose of creating a disturbance, and also that I had enough drink taken before going there. In the first place, I challenge Mr Olphert to prove that such was my intention or purpose, and so far as having had enough drink taken to warrant Mr Olphert in refusing me a glass of beer, is a most deliberate falsehood. o a a # <a o I am, &c, C. D. RANKIN. Little River, June 6, 1876. [The remainder of our correspondent's letter is entirely irrelevant, and of such a nature that we must decline inserting it. We may remark that Mr Rankin's name was not mentioned in our report, as we considered it quite immaterial to the point. at issue, which svas, whether a publican was justified in refusing drink to any one, except on the ground of drunkenness. As he considers he has been aspersed by the nature of Mr Olphert's defence, we allow him the opportunity of denying the allegations made, though it would have been better if he had attended the Court and told his own story; but we must utterly protest against a notion which seems to prevail among some of our readers, that the columns of a newspaper should be made a vehicle for personal abuse between neighbors who are at variance.]
