. The Manawatu. Times Bays:—Mr John Davey made a telling appeal to the Resident Magistrate on Thursday, against payment of sum of £1 17s for which he had been summoned. .The defence was that the meat sued for had been obtained by his Missus during thelife time of his predecessor, arid he, asked his Worship if it •was M;at all square that one chap should be asked to pay for what another fellow rimy have eaten.*' The Bench in reply remarked that the defendant had evidently paid no attention to the advice of Mr dweller with regard to " yidders, and in marrying the other chap's relict, be took her with all her accomplishments and imperfections, liabilities and responsibilities. " And so pool' John Davey had to pay for the meat that his predecessor had consumed." We think we hear Mr Tony Weller 'exclaim:—.' Ah Samivel my boy, never' you marry a vidder. If you feel inclined, that way, just go and pizen yourself, my boy. Hanging aint genteel; so pizen yourself, Samivel —pizen yourself, rather than marry a widder."
