The President then left the chair, and Mr ,W- Penjington. was chosen Chairman, and asked the meeting to proceed to the election of a fresh committee.' * Mr M'Gregor had great pleasure in proposing Mr J. Aylmer as President, and paid a high compliment to that gentleman's assiduity during/past years.:. The proposal was, seconded by Mr Bruce and "carried unanimously. Mr: W. Sims was re-elected Vice-president, and the following gentlemen' were chosen a committee for the ensuing year :—Messrs Bruce, Harris, Barry, Penlington, Henning, Kissel, and the Rev. H. Stocker. After a vote ofthanks to the Chairman the meeting separated. ' A meeting of the Committee wag held immediately afterwards, 'at which the Rev. H. Stocker was elected Secretary, and Treasurer. Elsewhere will be. found an advertisement of more interest to the inhabitants of the Peninsula than is usual with such notifications. We refer to one issued by the Public Works Department, calling for tenders for the construction. of the first section of the Akaroa railway. This section will bring the line to somewhere, about the neighborhood of Wascoe's, and of itself will be of immense advantage to the Peninsula. But it is as ah< instalment of what will then be a. necessary J whole that it posses its chief value. . We heartily congratulate the district at large on this realization of what many have' been disposed to look upon 'as an.. improbable dream. Those gentlemen who have worked earnestly arid zealously in spite of the opposition of foes and the half-heartedness of friends, are entitled to the warmest thanks of the community, and must feel that the reward of. tneir exertions' is mow commencing in earnest. We have received the May number of "Castner's Monthly." ... This excellent periodical fully keeps up its high reputation, and contains a mass of information cmi* nently useful to all who cultivate the soil. In; the present number ia an article on makihg, in which the writer' commands the practice obtaining in some .parts of America and England of dairies contribute ing their milk to ! a common stock,' and- the cheese being produced in a factory: The idea might be worth consideration qn; the Peninsula. ' :...... ;, / . In another column will be found an advertisement signed by the Minister of Lands which it" would be well for all, owners and occupiers, of land to " make a note of." In if the Government notify that they have determined to prosecute in every case of the destruction of removal of survey The penalty that may be in-' flicted for this offence reaches to a fine of £50, and tie extreme penalty will be pressed for on conviction. It seems hardly credible -that can be so culpably careless as to be guilty';of: an : offence which must lead to no end of trouble and confusion, but it appears, '■ nevertheless, to be. the case.. Perhaps the fear of consequences may deter those whose sense; of right is insufficient to prevent their-indulgence in such a mischievous ;, . ; ;7
