The Akaroa Mail. TUESDAY, MAY 6.

The following telegram was received yesterday afternoon by His Worship the Mayor : — " Christchurch, May 5,1879.' " The Mayor, Akaroa. " Governor requests me to inform you that his time being so limited, he will be unable to visit Akaroa upon the present occasion, but anticipates the pleasure of doing so on a future and early date. . "J. T. Fisher." It will thus be seen that we are to be deprived of the expected pleasure of a visit from His Excellency. We are unaware, of course, of the reasons which may have caused this decision, on the part of His Excellency, or his advisers, but on the face of it, it does appear somewhat inexplicable. The itinerary which was forwarded to our Mayor in common with the representatives of other public bodies throughout the Middle Island, has been exactly adhered to with this solitary exception. Why then has Akaroa been treated in this exceptional manner? If it really is done at His Excellency's instance, and to suit his convenience, of course there is nothing more to be said, but we cannot help thinking that in the arrangements of a tour through a country to which he is a stranger, the Governor would be guided by the advice of his Ministers. If this"be "the case, the omission of Akaroa from the programme at the eleventh hour may bear a totally different construction, and is as much open to criticism as any other act of the Government. There is no doubt the change in the original programme will cause a - considerable amount of disappointment, and in the absence of further information, it will be difficult to prevent the inhabitants from conceiving the impression that, their .town and district has been slighted. At any rate we hope that the promise of a visit at an early date contained iii the latter part of the telegram will be carried out, in which case perhaps it will not be too much to hope that Hid Excellency will be able to devote a somewhat longer time to his visit than would have been possible on the present occasion.
